Accidents
At this precise moment in time a significant accident is taking place somewhere. The National Highway Traffic Administration says for instance that each year there are more than five million motor vehicle accidents in the United States. This equates to more than one car accident every single minute that passes by. Many of these accidents are ultimately considered by both parties to be minor, or “no fault”, but how many truly are?
So often injuries sustained from a collision on the road or a slip and fall at work are ignored because it is assumed that the pain will eventually heal 100%. Many times the pain at the offset can feel sharper and eventually subside but the lingering effects of the injury may ultimately last a lifetime and can even become entirely debilitating down the road. It is important to understand this fact: Any substantial injury resulting from a situation that was outside of your control and was due to the negligence of another should never be underestimated or ignored.
Wrongful Death
According to the Center for Disease Control, Accidents comprise of the third leading cause of death in the United States behind only heart disease and cancer. This means that more people die every year from accidents than by a stroke, alzheimer’s disease, diabetes or any other serious chronic illness.
As it pertains to another extremely common area where premature death takes place, a recent study by Johns Hopkins University determined that approximately 250,000 deaths occur in the United States each year due directly to Medical Malpractice. To put this into perspective, there are normally 2.8 million deaths in total per year, so we are talking nearly ten percent of those who have lost their lives actually died because of errors in judgment committed by those that we trust most with our health.
Medical Malpractice
On an even larger scale, medical professionals inflict non-fatal but substantial injuries on patients, most of which go unfiled. Why is that? It is often because we have complete faith in these people whom most of us assume know exactly what they are doing, in every situation, and at all times. Because they went to medical school or nursing school, or have years of experience as an EMT or as an anesthesiologist, they are normally given the benefit of the doubt by most patients that they see even when mistakes are made.
With over three decades of experience attorney Michael Castano understands how common this “benefit of the doubt” for our medical professionals is in all of us. Unfortunately though, it often leads to allowing those who have severely impacted your life off of the hook and also allows inadequate healthcare professionals to continue to practice unchecked and potentially hurt others in the future.
